Lincoln, Neb., July 10, 2013 — The Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is accepting applications for volunteer guides, or docents, for its 50th anniversary year. Docents have provided tours of the museum’s collection and exhibitions since 1964.
Applicants need only an interest in art and the ability and desire to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds, including children. They do not have to have a background in art history or be an art teacher. Education about the arts comes as part of the training sessions that are required for new volunteers.
The deadline to apply for the fall 2013 docent training course is July 31. The course begins at Sheldon, 12th and R streets, at 9 a.m. on Aug. 19. Ongoing monthly training sessions are held throughout the school year.
Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students from Lincoln Public Schools are the primary beneficiaries of the docent-led tours. Because of this, the docent program requires a commitment of one morning per week throughout the school year. Emphasis is placed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning tours, but many additional tour groups are scheduled for afternoons and other days.

Sheldon Museum of Art houses a permanent collection of more than 12,000 objects focusing on American art. It is open free to the public during regular hours: Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; closed on Monday.
